Dear friend,
In 1997 PRERAK threw a pebble in the still and deep
waters of community ignorance about cancer to dispel that
ignorance and it started a ripple which has gained momentum
and now psychosocial oncology is a recognized aspect of
treatment of Cancer .
PRERAK has kept its pledge to inspire persons to celebrate
Life in spite of being touched by Cancer.
Over 1000 families have been helped in some way or the
other . Either by actively enjoying holidays together , or
bonding through communication and resuming ties or mending
broken associations and even marriages, --the list is endless.
The result is that patients do not feel abandoned and their
families do not feel completely helpless and they have happier
memories.
The feeling that Cancer is not the end of life is
percolating slowly but surely. There is enough evidence all
around that even in our Indian community Cancer is losing it’s
stigma. Patients are not being isolated to the extent they
were even a decade ago.
However this change is noticeable in the urban setting and
this is probably due to the efforts of Cancer awareness that
is being done by PRERAK and other NGO support groups and many
other agencies in India. This effort needs to be disseminated
in the rural and remote areas also.
Under the Aegis of Cancer Care India, the Apex body of
support groups for cancer in India, of which PRERAK is a
founding member, regular cancer awareness camps have been
held for the National Cadet Corps in different states –and
we hope that the enlightened cadets will carry the message
of ….
- Do not be afraid of Cancer, Fight it. It is not
contagious.
- Earlier Cancer is detected more treatable it is
- There is Life inspite of Cancer.
To the remote corners of our nation.
There is still so much that has to be done and the medical
profession is forging ahead in finding a cure for cancer
---our job is to encourage the social, psychological, mental
and emotional strength of each patient and his or her care
givers to enjoy life while it is there to the fullest as
possible.
Let us join hands and carry on our work. |
